Virtual Therapy or ‘telemental health’ has increased exponentially since the Covid pandemic of 2020. It has proven to have similar, to exact same results as in person psychotherapy sessions.
Virtual Therapy promotes access to people who may live in remote areas, or who have mobility issues. It can be accommodating for new parents, stay at home parents, or for people who work from home and want to fit in a therapy session during their lunch break. We live in a busy world, and sometimes traveling to an in-person therapy session is a barrier to care.
It is recommended to have a stable internet with phone backup, private location (ie. not a waiting room), headphones (if desired), and to use a desktop/laptop/or tripod for a stable camera. To be most efficient, it is recommended to stay seated, (unless you are doing a phone walk-and-talk session) so you can be fully present in the session. You have the opportunity to make it as comfortable as you like, so feel free to wrap yourself in a weighted blanket, dim your lights, make a hot tea or coffee, put on a noise machine or nature sounds, light incense, sage your space, and set an intention for your therapy session.
Yes! AF-EMDR can be done virtually. It will require a steady camera to be on, with the placement allowing the therapist to view and track the bilaterial stimulation (BLS or tapping) during the desensitization phase.
No, unfortunately at this time Sojourn Psychotherapy is not conducting Sound Therapy virtually as it requires a very specific set up to fully hear and absorb the resonances of the instruments.
Yes! You are welcome to put on a set of headphones and hit a trail or walk around your neighborhood while we are doing therapy. Please note this will be considered walk-and-talk therapy, and we will need at least one virtual intake therapy session where you are not moving around, along with a separate walk-and-talk consent form. AF-EMDR cannot be done during a walk-and-talk therapy session.
Please note Sojourn Psychotherapy does not have any control over your virtual setting, and that it is the client’s responsibility to prepare a safe and supportive space that is conducive to psychotherapy. The therapy sessions will always be held over a PHIPA compliant platform, as your privacy is of upmost importance.
